"The Exes"

Yesterday I wrapped filming a small role on the TV Land Comedy "The Exes" ~ It was my first time working on a multi-camera sitcom that films in front of a "live studio audience" and it was SO much fun! My episode is set to air Wednesday, July 25th ~ I hope you all tune in!! Really....This show is hilarious ;)

Urban Original

Hey There Everyone! I would like to introduce you to Ashley Bryant. She is a super talented graphic designer who recently created a branding guide for the website www.UrbanOG.com (which I just so happen to LoVe, and I shop at a little too often :p ) and she used MY pictures for her presentation!!!

I love this and I  think she did an awesome job... Go check out more of her work at www.AshleyBryantDesign.com

...when someone says "No"...

What do you do when someone says "No" to something that you really want? How do you react? Today I started thinking about this... as an actor and singer, rejection is so....typical. expected. par for the course. We performers deal with hearing "No" more often then not. Like, seriously, ALL the time! Sometimes it really hurts.... sometimes we just end up having a soy latte with our Besty at Starbucks and never think about it again.... but the fact is, we get said "No" to SO often that now I'm starting to wonder... is that weird? Are there other people out there who get rejected this much? Are there people out there that DON'T have to hear "No" 100 times before they hear "Yes"?

I'm guessing you can learn a lot about a person by how they react to hearing "No"  (although I hope no one is studying me, because I admit I've had at least a few seriously questionable reactions myself!! )  Do you get crushed? Do you feel defeated? Do you feel enraged? Defiant? Does it empower you to keep going? To pick yourself back up? To do better? To be the BEST?

As I was thinking about all of this... I saw this quote posted on Facebook:

"Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm." - Winston Churchill

That's the same guy who is quoted as saying this:

"Never, Never, NEVER Give Up."

That sounds like a guy who heard the word "No" a few times.

Guest Guitar Player Series: Session 5

It's that time again... Time for another Guest Guitar Player video!!This one features Matt Skversky on guitar. I was really happy I was able to shoot this video with Matt... First of all... he picked a GREAT song!! (more about that in a second) Second of all, I was able to squeeze this in before Matt left L.A. for good, and I was really happy that we were able to make it happen!

Matt was only in LA for a short time, but he quickly got involved with our little circle of musicians and made his mark playing bass for The Cold Chills while he was here. We are *so* going to miss him!

The song he chose was Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" ... I love this song. This was the song that made me realize what a great songwriter she was... like, next-level...she stopped me in my tracks with lines like ...

"Life is like a pipe...and I'm a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside..."

Really, Amy!? you're killing me... She had this way of getting you inside her head and somehow making you understand... She had a perfect balance of blunt realism and poeticism that I always loved... so sad that she's gone.

So, this is our take on a great tune... Thanks for shooting this with me, Matt!!! And as always, special thanks to Rob Gaudet for shooting and editing this video!!!

Guest Guitar Player Series *Session 4*

This session of GGP is *EXTRA* special to me, because this guitar player also happens to be MY DAD!!!! He's the best guitar player I know, and I was SO happy we were able to make this video the last time I was in my home town.... This song means a lot to me too... As the story goes, my Dad, who has always been a working musician, was on his way to a gig the night my mom went into labor with me. He ditched the gig and rushed back to the hospital to be with her...

The next time he had a gig with the band he told them he had a little girl and they dedicated this song to me!

...I believe that event was also somehow responsible for my life-long Love/Obsession with Stevie Wonder. :)

Here is me and my Dad, Bob Schlink, doing "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder...

[vsw id="NrHlcc649lU" source="youtube" width="425" height="344" autoplay="no"]

Special thanks to Rob Gaudet for shooting and editing this video... and for traveling all the way to Providence, RI with two cameras, a tripod, and an entire light box in his suitcase to make this happen!

One Mic Stand

I'm so excited to be hosting ONE MIC STAND, the very FIRST open mic night at Whiskey Blue LA! Our first night is this THURSDAY, February 2nd! Here is some info and a few guidelines for how the night will go…. lets have some fun and make some MUSIC!!!

GUIDELINES: Sign Up: You must SIGN UP to perform! You can contact me via email or Facebook to put your name on the list, OR you can sign up when you get there. The sign up list is FIRST COME FIRST SERVE, and that includes email sign ups… this means, if you are the FIRST one to email me, you are FIRST on the list and so on… for this reason its it's best that you get there at 7:45/8pm SHARP to see where you are on the list! If you are not there when you're called, I'll call the next person…if you come late you are free to sign up again at the end of the list and I will get to you if I can!

Performance Time: When it's your time to shine, you are allowed 2 SONGS OR 10 MINUTES, whichever comes first! This is to give you a fair amount of time to do yo' thang, but ALSO leave enough time for everyone else to get their shot to perform too. I will be strict with this. :/

Backline and Equipment info: This is an ACOUSTIC open mic night. We do NOT have a drum kit, and we do not have enough gear to support an entire band. We DO have a keyboard available to use, mics, and amps for guitarists.

Your Host: I will be your HOST for the night! That means that I will be the one minding the sign-up list, calling up our performers, and keeping track of our 2-songs-or-10-minutes rule. It ALSO means that I will be doing a few songs (with my friend David Mendoza on Keys) to warm up the crowd at the beginning of the night. After our short set of tunes, I turn the night over to YOU!

Parking, Drinks, and The W Hotel: There is NO cover for this event BUT we encourage you to DRINK, EAT, BE MERRY (and TIP your servers & bartenders!! :D ) We will have drink & food specials as well as discounted VALET PARKING!

PLEASE feel free to contact me with questions, and contact me if you want to SIGN UP to perform! ava@avagaudet.com

PLEASE forward to your friends! The more people we have involved the more likely it is that this night will continue! Let's make some MUSIC!!!!!

Guest Guitar Player Series Session 3

I was really excited to have my friend Casey DC join me for session 3 of my GGPS... Me and Casey have been friends since 2004 when we were both on the National Tour of RENT! Seems like a lifetime ago, actually....but we both ended up here in LA and have always been friends... so I asked (forced) him to join me for this session. Casey is in the band 9 Electric, and if you haven't already heard of them I have a feeling you may soon... they're kinda blowing up at the moment, So stay tuned... Check them out here: www.9electric.com

He chose the song "Uprising" by Muse...I love this song... and you know, we did our own little thing with it...

Concert for Victor

Tomorrow night, Tuesday, September 13th, I am honored to be performing in a benefit concert which will take place at the Carrie Hamilton Theatre at The Pasadena Playhouse at 7:30 PM. All proceeds go to the Rodriguez Family Care Fund...

This concert will benefit 23-year-old Victor Rodriguez and his family. In June 2011, Sacramento newlyweds Victor and Crystal Rodriguez went parasailing on the last day of their honeymoon in the Bahamas. At a height of approximately 200 feet their harness snapped, and they fell into the ocean. Crystal was killed, and Victor suffered severe injuries. Neither of them had health or life insurance. They had only been married 12 days.

The story is heartbreaking, and sadly the battle continues for Victor. He is currently hospitalized due to complications from the accident, and won't be able to attend the concert in person, as he had planned. We hope this night of performances can lift his spirit, ease his financial burdens, and provide him with hope, love and support.

The line up of performers is incredible, including Melora Hardin (THE OFFICE / Broadway’s Chicago), Anneliese van der Pol (That’s So Raven’s / Broadway’s Beauty & the Beast), Monika Beal (Long Beach Opera’s Philip Glass’ Akhnaten), 30 Rock’s Todd Buonopane (Broadway’s The 25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee), Hart of Dixie’s Deborah S. Craig (Broadway’s The 25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee), Devin Kelly, Charley Izabella King (Broadway’s The Producers), Leigh Ann Larkin (Broadway’s Gypsy & A Little Night Music), High School Musical: Get in the Picture’s Jennifer Malenke (Broadway’s Into The Woods - Revival) and Jacquelynn Ware, and the night will be headlined by Emmy winner, Wane Brady.

If you're in the LA area and can come out to this special event, please show your support!! Tickets are still available, and your contribution will be so appreciated!!

Full-price tickets are $99 including admission to the post-show reception, or $45 for the show only (both include a $4.00 ticketing fee).

*Special priced tickets will be available until 12pm Tomorrow here: http://www.goldstar.com/events/pasadena-ca/concert-for-victor And you can purchase tickets at pasadenaplayhouse.org until 6pm, or pay-what-you-can at the door

the TWIST experience...so far

Ok, first of all... it has been SO LONG since I have blogged! Wowzers! I guess I have just been so hyper-focused on my work in TWIST that I've been ignoring this, leaving countless stupid videos unshared, a multitude of adorable outfits undocumented, and some truly incredible experiences unexpressed! This must stop TODAY! There is so much to talk about, here's the abbreviated version.... I have been happily dedicated to TWIST for these past couple of months...trying to enjoy each moment before its over, and it will be over SOON! Just 5 more performances to go before our run at The Pasadena Playhouse is over! (there's still time to get tickets - GO HERE)

TWIST went into previews on June 14th, at which point we made some major changes to the show (all for the better) and in the end it all came together in such an incredible way! By the time opening weekend came around we were all SO excited and proud of what we had accomplished, and we just wanted to share it with the world!

Opening Night Gala (for more pictures of opening weekend go to HERE)

We've had a great responce from our community, Click here to hear what people are saying about the show:

Here are a few V.I.P's that came to check us out:

Kristin Chenoweth

Louis Farrakhan (really!?)

Adam Lambert (with my fellow TWIST cast mate, Holly Hyman)

And....just when I thought it couldn't get any better, I met my idol, my favorite artist of all time and my musical inspiration,

the one and ONLY

STEVIE WONDER!!

aaaaaaahhhhh!

I'm so grateful for this experience... to have had the chance to work with the amazing Miss Debbie Allen, and to have met, worked with, and become *friends* with this incredible cast, crew, and creative team!!
